Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre invite to a Community Forum on sexual assault legislation

Dear Colleagues:

As you may know, the Minister of Public Safety, Vic Toews, recently announced that Canadians should consider reinstating the term rape in the current sexual assault legislation. His rationale is that “serious crimes of sexual assault such as rape are being classified along with other sexual assault offences such as sexual touching”.

We at the Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre believe that it is important to discuss and develop a collective position and statement to send to our allies in the federal government and the community at-large. We may or may not be able to influence potential government legislation but at the very least we should raise our voices about this issue as it will have an effect on the women’s community.

The ORCC is holding a community forum to further discuss this issue on June 16th at the Centre from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.

If you are interested in shaping a response to this announcement please confirm your attendance By: June 15 - you can contact Ikram Jama by phone, 613-562-2334 Ext: 31 or email: ijama@magma.ca or onessar@magma.ca.
